My formative development in sculpture was conceptual, always with a focus on the materials used and what they had to say. SUNLIGHT and BONE This current work has honed that material regard to its simplest form. With the use of a magnifying lens I draw with SUNLIGHT; solar tattooing on BONE. These two materials, SUN and BONE, are integral to life itself. They are primordial building blocks. As an artist creating this work I get to sit in the SUN, focusing on a tiny, brilliant point of light, slowly tracing black lines across smooth white surfaces. It’s mesmerizing, the SUN marking the BONE, working with the evidence of life and death, and the beauty they create together. The BONES are traces of lives lived. The black line are traces of SUNLIGHT. Many of these BONES I acquire from local hunters, butchers, or road kills. I peel them back to their core structure, then I reinvigorate the remains with designs created from SUNLIGHT. These finished works are a material testament to the beauty of the simple and integral.
