Corolla is a Latin word meaning “small crown,” while Celica is derived from the word coelica, also Latin, meaning “heavenly” or “celestial.” The Corolla and the Celica are two of the most popular cars ever manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota, although exporting of the Celica ceased in July 2005. Corolla Celica is a two word phrase murmured by a small child during her dream. It is also a six syllable mantra that, when chanted, can produce many benefits, such as increased productivity, improved energy, focus, and memory.
Corolla Celica 2023 is a series of works consisting of wooden shapes collaged together to evoke suburban and exurban landscapes. The repetition of shapes points to the interchangeable aesthetics of the built environment encountered during different lighting environments.
Corolla Celica 2023 is partly inspired by forecasts regarding the collapse or failure of current physical arrangements, and the consequences of Americans isolated in locations with objects that can no longer execute on their original functions (transportation, shelter, provision of basic utilities). Until that time, the Romantic valences of our physical arrangements, shopping centers, parking lots, will continue to be experienced and assessed.
