Primarily a sculptor, albeit one actively engaged with two dimensional media, Anna Pedersen lived and worked in NYC for 20 years prior to moving to Austin in 2013. During that time she worked in two well established galleries while exhibiting her own work in New York, Las Vegas, Cleveland, and other cities in the US as well as Paris and locations abroad.
Born in Beaufort, SC and raised in Bergen County, NJ at the age of five Pedersen’s family moved to Fargo, ND. Pedersen left the Great Plains at eighteen to earn her BA in Art History and Visual Art from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City, where she graduated Cum Laude. Pedersen earned her MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and completed the Sheridan Center Collegiate Teaching program at Brown University during this time.
A fascination with anatomy, both real and imagined, mythologies, and the absurd runs a consistent vein through Pedersen’s work. Often infusing the work with a literal, tongue in cheek humor, at times touching on the grotesque and at others the beautiful, Pedersen desires to render the known unfamiliar and comical and to make you a bit uncomfortable in your own skin.
